Before you start

Most public golf courses in Japan accept visitor bookings, but the reservation page may be entirely in Japanese. Prepare the play date, preferred area, number of players, transportation method, rental requirements, and a Japanese phone number if the platform requires one.

For the easiest first booking, choose a weekday daytime plan, a visitor-friendly course, rental clubs confirmed in advance, and a plan marked 昼食付き or 食事付き.

Step 1: Choose the right booking site

Rakuten GORA and GDO are useful for broad nationwide searches. Jalan Golf is convenient for travelers who already use Recruit services. Value Golf is especially useful for one-person reservations and joining other golfers.

Large course operators also accept direct reservations. Accordia Golf and PGM operate many courses across Japan, while Prince Golf Resorts is useful for golf-and-hotel trips. Compare marketplace plans with the course operator's official page before deciding.

Step 2: Search by area and travel time

Do not search only by prefecture. A course that looks close on a map may require a long taxi ride from the nearest station.

  • Tokyo trips: compare Chiba, Saitama, Kanagawa, and Ibaraki.
  • Narita arrivals: look for courses near Narita Airport or stations with a clubhouse shuttle.
  • Mt. Fuji trips: search Gotemba, Hakone, Yamanashi, and eastern Shizuoka.
  • Osaka or Kyoto trips: compare Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, and Shiga.
  • Resort golf: check Hokkaido, Okinawa, Karuizawa, Hakone, and Izu.

Look for the nearest station, shuttle-bus schedule, driving time, toll-road cost, and whether a rental car is practical.

Step 3: Select the correct plan

A golf course can list many plans for the same day. The cheapest result may have restrictions that make it unsuitable.

Treat every displayed start period as a different product, even when the course and date are identical. An early-morning plan may be through-play with no lunch, a normal daytime plan may include lunch and accept two players, and an afternoon plan may have a different player minimum or finishing condition.

  • ビジター予約: visitor booking is accepted.
  • 2サム保証: two players can remain as a pair.
  • 2サム割増: an extra charge applies when only two people play.
  • 3B割増: an extra charge may apply for three players.
  • セルフプレー: the group plays without a caddie.
  • 昼食付き or 食事付き: a basic lunch benefit is included.
  • スループレー: play continues without the usual long lunch break.
  • ナイタープレー or 夜間プレー: golf is played after dark under floodlights.
  • 乗用カート: a riding cart is included or available.

If you are booking for two people, check both 2サム保証 and 2サム割増. A plan can guarantee a twosome and still charge a surcharge.

For three players, check 3B割増 separately. Do not assume that a plan with no two-player surcharge also waives the three-player surcharge. Recheck these conditions whenever you change the tee time because the rules can differ between morning, midday, and afternoon slots.

Night-golf plans are separate products, not simply normal tee times played later. Confirm whether the plan is nine or 18 holes, whether all holes are floodlit, and whether lockers, baths, the restaurant, and the front desk remain open. Dinner is usually not included, and late return transport can be limited.

Step 4: Check the real total price

Japanese booking results normally show a per-person price. Multiply it by the number of players, then check what is included.

  • 総額: total displayed amount.
  • 税込: consumption tax included.
  • 税別: tax is added separately.
  • ゴルフ場利用税: golf-course utilization tax.
  • ロッカー代: locker charge.
  • 昼食付き: basic lunch included; some upgraded dishes cost extra.
  • キャンセル料: cancellation charge.

Many daytime plans include a basic lunch. At the restaurant, several dishes may have no supplement, while premium choices may require an additional payment. Confirm the menu on the course website when available.

Step 5: Confirm rentals and course rules

Never assume rental clubs are automatically reserved because the course offers them. Contact the course or add the rental request during booking.

Confirm club handedness, shaft preference if available, shoe size, rental price, and collection location. Also check the clubhouse dress code, arrival deadline, tattoo policy for bathing facilities, and whether cashless payment is accepted.

Many courses also have a practice range, but the balls are normally paid separately. Allow roughly ¥300 to ¥700 for a warm-up basket and check the range distance, number of balls, opening hours, and whether it accepts coins, tokens, or a scorecard charge. Very early and night plans may not have full access.

Step 6: Review the cancellation policy

Cancellation rules vary significantly. Some courses charge only near the play date, while others apply charges earlier for weekends, holidays, or group bookings.

Check the cancellation deadline, fee per person or per group, rain policy, no-show rules, and how to cancel. Bad weather does not always mean the course will waive the fee. Wait for an official closure notice before assuming the booking is cancelled.

Step 7: Save the confirmation details

After completing the reservation, save screenshots or a PDF of the confirmation page and email. Keep the course name in Japanese, reservation number, date, start time, OUT or IN start, number of players, plan name, total price, and cancellation terms.

Arrive around 45 to 60 minutes before the tee time unless the course specifies otherwise. At reception, show the reservation confirmation and say: 予約を確認したいです。 This means, "I would like to confirm my reservation."

What happens when you arrive

Many full-service courses follow a familiar sequence:

  • Leave the golf bag at the entrance or designated bag stand.
  • Go to 受付 and complete a guest registration form with your name, address or hotel, telephone number, and signature.
  • Receive a locker-key or card holder. It may contain a physical key plus a barcode, IC chip, magnetic strip, or account number.
  • Keep the holder with you. Restaurants, shops, and practice facilities may charge purchases to its locker number or account.
  • After play, collect your belongings and take the holder to reception or the 自動精算機.
  • Scan, tap, or insert it, review the itemized bill, pay, take the receipt, and return the key or holder when required.

Procedures differ at self-service, resort, early, twilight, and night plans. Some courses use QR check-in or prepayment instead of a paper form and post-play settlement.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reading the displayed price as the group total instead of the per-person price.
  • Missing a two-player or three-player surcharge.
  • Adding a full lunch budget when the plan already includes a basic meal.
  • Assuming rental clubs are reserved automatically.
  • Misplacing the locker-key holder used for purchases and checkout.
  • Leaving a passport or large amount of cash in an ordinary locker instead of a valuables locker.
  • Signing a restaurant or shop charge without checking whose locker account is being used.
  • Choosing a course without checking the last shuttle bus or return transport.
  • Ignoring the cancellation date because the weather forecast looks uncertain.
  • Entering a name that does not match the passport or payment card.

FAQ

Can tourists book Japanese golf courses?

Yes. Many courses accept visitor reservations through major booking platforms or their official websites. Some private or member-oriented courses may have additional restrictions.

Do I need a Japanese phone number?

Some platforms or courses require a domestic contact number. Requirements vary, so check the registration form before selecting a non-refundable plan.

Is lunch normally included?

Many standard daytime plans include a basic lunch benefit. Some menu items are included at no extra cost, while upgraded dishes may require a supplement. Early-morning, twilight, and through-play plans are more likely to exclude lunch.

Can two tourists play without joining another group?

Look for 2サム保証. Also check 2サム割増 because a twosome surcharge may still apply.

Is the booking confirmed immediately?

Many online plans confirm immediately, but some requests require course approval. Read the confirmation screen and email carefully before arranging transport.
