Quick answer

At many Japanese golf courses, you check in first, receive a locker-key holder or account card, play the round, and pay at the end of the day. Some courses use a staffed front desk. Others use a self-checkout machine, often called an automatic settlement machine.

The machine may ask you to scan or insert the card holder, key tag, barcode, or account number you received at reception. That is why you should not leave the holder in the locker or golf bag when you go to pay.

What the key holder actually does

The item you receive at check-in is often more than a locker key. It may also connect your restaurant bill, shop purchases, rental clubs, practice balls, locker fee, and other charges to your account.

During the day, the restaurant or shop may ask for your locker number or card holder instead of asking you to pay immediately. Those charges are then settled together at the end.

The usual checkout flow

After the round, return to the clubhouse, collect your clubs and personal items, then change or use the bath if you want. Before leaving the course, go to the front desk or self-checkout machine.

The machine may show your play fee, lunch supplement, locker fee, golf course utilization tax, rental clubs, shop items, drinks, practice range charges, and small-group surcharge if any. Check the total before paying.

If the machine offers English, use it. If not, look for words such as 精算, 支払い, クレジットカード, 現金, 領収書, and 明細.

Credit card or cash

Larger courses and resort courses often accept major credit cards, but do not assume every course is fully cashless. A foreign card may also fail at a machine even if it works elsewhere in Japan.

Bring one major credit card and some Japanese yen. That small cash buffer helps with taxi fare, vending machines, practice balls, or payment terminal problems.

If the machine is confusing

Do not fight the machine for ten minutes. Take the holder, receipt screen, or printed slip to the front desk and say that you would like help checking out.

Useful phrase: 精算をお願いします. It means "I would like to settle the bill."
